Cutting Wire

The key component of hot wire cutting systems

The cutting wire is a key component of all hot wire foam cutting equipment, whether it is a manual hot wire cutter or a professional CNC machine.

The main differences lie in the wire diameter used for specific machine and cutter sizes, and in the type of NiCr alloy selected. For our foam cutting solutions, we use two different NiCr alloys that fully meet all quality and performance requirements for reliable and consistent operation: NiChrome Wire and special TitaniumAlloy Wire

These alloys provide the optimal balance of durability, cutting accuracy, and thermal stability required for professional foam cutting applications.

NICHROME WIRE

Cooper coated Nichrome wire (NiCr) is the preferred choice for manual hot wire foam cutters due to its excellent resistance to corrosion and oxidation at high temperatures. It heats up rapidly, reaching several hundred degrees Celsius within seconds for fast and efficient cutting.

With high tensile strength and a high melting point, NiCr wire offers an optimal balance between durability and energy efficiency, making it ideal for foam cutting applications and compatible with most power supplies.

TITANIUM ALLOY WIRE FOR CNC MACHINES

TitaniumAlloy wire is a specially developed cutting wire alloy designed to replace the industry-standard NiCr wire. It is intended for demanding users who want to expand the capabilities of their CNC foam cutting machines and achieve improved cutting quality.

Although slightly more expensive than regular NiCr wire, TitaniumAlloy Wire breaks less often (on average, it lasts 5-6 times longer than NiCr wire) and is much more stretch resistant at high temperatures. As a result, it can be used with a stronger tensioning spring or pneumatic tensioning which results in much higher cutting speeds and improved cutting quality.

Please note that TitaniumAlloy Wire requires special fixing and tensioning. When using it on other manufacturers’ CNC machines, ensure compatibility and adjust your wire fixing and tensioning systems as needed to achieve the full potential of this exceptional alloy.

NB! We can also produce custom TitaniumAlloy wire to your specifications.

MANUAL HOT WIRE CUTTERS

For our manual hot wire cutters, we use special cooper coated Nichrome alloy wire with a diameter of 0.55 mm (±0.03 mm). It is supplied as ready-made NiCr wire with two lugs at the ends for quick and easy installation on the cutter.

We offer NiChrome wire for manual cutters, available individually (1 pc), in kits (1 kit = 10 pcs), as well as in 20-meter spools.

NB! We can also produce custom Nichrome wire to your specifications. Various diameters are available, and you can choose the desired length. Lugs can also be added to the ends of the wire upon request.

HOT WIRE CNC MACHINES

For our hot wire CNC machines, we offer TitaniumAlloy wires and NiCr wires in the following diameters, each carefully selected to provide optimal cutting performance, durability, and thermal stability. Our wires are supplied in spools to ensure uninterrupted operation and are fully compatible with the power requirements of our CNC foam cutting machines.

  • 0.15 mm – approx. 600 meters per spool
  • 0.25 mm – approx. 250 meters per spool
  • 0.35 mm – approx. 150 meters per spool
  • 0.45 mm – approx. 90 meters per spool
  • 0.55 mm – approx. 70 meters per spool

WHAT IS NICHROME – NICR?

NiChrome (NiCr) wire is constructed from an alloy made from Nickel (chemical element with symbol Ni and atomic number 28), Chromium (Cr and atomic number 24), and often Iron (Fe and atomic number 26). NiChrome cutting wire has a unique characteristic: It heats up when electricity is applied. Manufacturers and hobbyists use NiChrome wire in many applications where wire must get hot or must withstand high temperatures.

TYPICAL COMPOSITION OF NICHROME ALLOY:

  • NiCr (A) – Ni (80%) and Cr (20%),
  • NiCr (C) – Ni (60%) and Cr (15%) and Fe (25%)

The properties of nichrome vary depending on its alloy. Figures given are representative of typical material and are accurate to expressed significant figures. Any variations are due to different percentages of nickel or chromium.

BENEFIT & HISTORY

NiChrome (NiCr) is ideally suited as a resistance wire heating alloy due to its high electrical resistivity, high melting point, and excellent resistance to oxidation at elevated temperatures. This resistance is achieved through the formation of a protective chromium oxide layer, which makes the alloy highly stable in air even at very high temperatures.

Originally patented around 1906 under the name “Chromel”, NiChrome was developed through the collaboration of metallurgist Albert Leroy Marsh and the Hoskins Manufacturing Company. Since then, the alloy has become widely known and is still marketed today under the name Nichrome.

Thanks to its durability, thermal stability, and consistent performance, NiChrome remains one of the most reliable and widely used materials for heating and cutting wire applications, including hot wire foam cutting equipment.
